ESA Foundation

The Epsilon Sigma Alpha Foundation is committed to promoting continuing education and supporting altruistic activities that create a meaningful impact within the global community. The Foundation’s core mission is service to others, captured in its guiding motto:

“Serving the World Community… Because We Care.”

Each year, ESA International awards a wide range of scholarships and grants to help students pursue further education beyond secondary school. Through the support of the ESA Foundation, numerous scholarships are made available annually to eligible applicants.

Applications open each year from September to February, with scholarship recipients announced in mid-June.

Emily Thomas Memorial Scholarship

The Emily Thomas Memorial Scholarship, sponsored by ESA Queensland, is exclusively available to Australian residents and is valued at US $1,000 to assist with tuition costs. While Australian applicants may apply for up to three ESA Foundation scholarships, this particular scholarship is reserved for Australians only.

The Emily Thomas Memorial Endowment was established in 1997 in honour of Emily Thomas, who served as ESA Queensland State President three times, leaving a lasting legacy of leadership and service.

In 2023, Jazmyn Von Dohren from Brisbane was the proud recipient of this scholarship.

Leukaemia Foundation – Dorothy Banks Bursary

The Dorothy Banks Bursary, valued at $5,000, is established in memory of Dorothy Banks, the Queensland Founder of ESA International. This bursary is jointly supported by ESA Australia and the Leukaemia Foundation Queensland.

Designed to enhance the care and services provided to patients in haematology settings, the bursary supports a Registered Allied Health Professional or Registered Nurse currently practicing in Queensland, who demonstrates passion and commitment to patient care. The bursary may be used for professional development or to attend a national or international conference in the field of haematology.

In recognition of the tireless fundraising efforts and enduring dedication of ESA members, a purpose-built accommodation facility was opened in 1994 at Raymond Terrace, South Brisbane. Originally known as ESA Village, it has since been redeveloped in partnership with Queensland Health and is now known as the ESA Blood Cancer Centre. Located in Dutton Park, Brisbane, the centre includes 30 fully furnished two- and three-bedroom units within a modern multi-storey complex.

ESA International & NCWQ Bursary

Value: $1,000

Supported by: ESA International in partnership with the National Council of Women Queensland (NCWQ)This bursary supports women enrolled in full-time tertiary education who are facing unique personal and geographic challenges.

Eligibility Criteria:

– Must be female and enrolled in full-time tertiary education
– Must have an immediate family member (parent or sibling) diagnosed with cancer at the time of application
– Must reside in rural or regional Queensland (excludes Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Ipswich, Logan, and Gold Coast areas)
– Must demonstrate commitment to leadership through active community participation
